Ecuador is the first birdwatching destination. More than 1600 species in a very small biodiverse area is a prove of it. Ecuador offers some of the most diverse places in the world from forested mountains descending to breathtaking waterfalls and crystalline streams. The views stretch far away to distant volcanoes. On Galapagos, birds are ever-present, about 60 species are residents, of which 28 are endemic, and over 30 migrant species regularly visit the Islands.

If you are short of time, you can even marvel with the opportunity of seeing amazing bird species. If you only have one day available Lake & Mountain will take you early in the morning to Maquipucuna, Bellavista or Mindo Reserves located about two hours far from Quito. Andes & Amazonas Birds' PARADISE

Sample Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival in Quito

We pick you up at the Airport. Transfer to Hotel Dann Carlton, which is situated in the modern centre of town. In the evening you will have a briefing with the guide. While enjoying a welcome cocktail you will be informed about the detailed order of events of your Ecuador Tour.

Day 02: Mindo

Early departure for Birdwatching on the Nono-Mindo road in the Andean Cloud forest, afterwards we continue to Mindo town. Overnight at a lodge in Mindo.

Day 03: Birdwatching in Mindo

Full day of birdwatching on the different trails of the Mindo cloud forest. Today you have the posibility to see the Andea Toucan, the famous Cock of the Rock, many Colobris among other species. Overnight at a lodge in Mindo.

Day 04: Choco Patche - Bellavista Lodge

Full day of birdwatching at the Choco path, which is located in the higher cloud forest. We spend the night at the Bella Vista Lodge. From your window you can observe the many hummingbirds species, who inhabits in the suroundings from the Lodge.

Day 05: Birdwatching in the suroundings of Bellavista Lodge

Today we will discover the cloud forest reserve of Bellavista. The 700 ha. area is the home of more than 320 species of birds, for example the tanager-finch, giant antpitta, swallow-tailed nightjar, plush-capped finch, beautiful jay, white-faced nun bird and also the plate-billed mountain toucan. Accommodation in the Bella Vista Lodge.

Day 06: Birdwatching on the Nono-Mindo Road

We will watch birds on the Nono-Mindo road and try to spot some of the very shy birds like plate-billed mountain Toucan, cock of the rock among others. In the late afternoon you will arrive in Quito and transfer to hotel.

Day 07: Tour to the Kapawi Lodge and Reserve

We will start your tour to the south very early in the morning, we will have 1 hour and 30 minutes bus ride until we get to Hacienda La Cienega, a very beautiful colonial hacienda, located in the foothills of the Cotopaxi volcano. Here passenger will be received with a special breakfast, prepared exclusively for our guests. Then, the journey continues through the Avenue of The Volcanoes were passengers see the Cotopaxi, Illinizas and Chimborazo volcanoes, passing through the town of Baños and finally getting down the Andes on the side of the Pastaza river to Shell. Around noon, as usual, we will take a small plane from Shell to Kapawi for an approximately 45-minute flight. Accommodation in the Kapawi lodge, close to the Pastaza River

Day 08, 09, 10: Birdwatching at the Kapawi lodge & Reserve

Full days of Birdwatching Tours in the rainforest. Accommodation in the Kapawi Lodge.

Day 11: Kapawi Lodge - Return flight to Quito

Early in the morning you will go by canoe to Montalvo. From this small settlement of the Achuar Indians you will fly back to Quito. We pick you up from the airport and bring you to your hotel.

Day 12: Quito - Papallacta Pass

Early drive to the Papallacta Pass (4.200m). Here we can watch Mountain and Paramo species. After that we will drive to the Papallacta hot springs where you can relax and hopefully see the ice giant Antizana. Overnight at Thermas de Papallacta Inn.

Day 13: Papallacta - San Isidro

On the way from Papallacta to the Eastern cloud forest of San Isidro you will already discover some interesting birds. In the afternoon we will watch birds in the surrounding area of the San Isidro lodge.

Day 14: San Isidro - Cordillera de los Guacamayos

Today we will observe birds at the Guacamayos Ridge (lower Mountain and mountain cloudforest). Travel to Quito in the late afternoon.
