Climbing Tours

Ecuador may be small, but it offers extraordinary challenges to climbers and hikers of all abilities. Ecuador has one of the world's greatest concentration of volcanoes. There are over thirty, of which at least eight are considered to be active. The high Andean peaks of Ecuador are located primarily along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, a fertile central valley, which is buttressed by two ranges, the Eastern and Western Cordilleras.

For your first few days in Ecuador, we recommend to acclimatize to the altitude by climbing some of the smaller mountains (4500 m /15,000 feet or less), such as Iliniza Norte, Imbabura or Pichincha. These lower peaks are non-glaciated, easily accessible within a day travel from Quito, and offer either hut facilities or nearby hostels that can be used as a climbing base.

Once your body has adjusted to the altitude, you are ready to try one of Ecuador's five classic glaciated peaks: Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana or Tungurahua. Experienced mountaineers can attempt the more remote and/or more difficult peaks of Sangay, El Altar and Iliniza Sur or the more challenging routes on the other mountains.

Lake & Mountain offers everything! Whatever you are looking for: high altitude acclimatization tours, easy climb tours or more challenging climbs are available with us! Our guides are experienced and licensed by ASEGUIM (Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Climbing Guides).

Chimborazo 6310m

Chimborazo is the highest mountain and due to its close proximity to the Equator Line, it is also the furthest point from the centre of the Earth. Climbing Chimborazo will be a challenge even for the most experienced climbers. Proper acclimatization, technical climbing experience, an excellent physical condition are required to cover the 1300-meter altitude difference between the Whymper Refuge and the summit, a 9 to 12 hour trek over never-ending glaciers. Be one of the few who have left their footprints on the most distant point from the earth's centre!

Cotopaxi 5987m

This snow capped active volcano has almost a perfect cone shape and reaching its top is a must for every mountain climber. Technically, the Cotopaxi is not a difficult mountain, but a good physical condition is a basic requirement. From the peak you will be marveled by the wide Andean landscapes and with a clear view you can even see all the snow-capped mountains of Ecuador. The crater has a diameter of 800m, from which a sulphur steam is still flowing. Cotopaxi is such a natural beauty you will not want to miss!

Cayambe 5790m

This is the only volcano in the world whose summit is crossed by the Equator Line. It is the third highest peak in Ecuador and it is quite famous for having the largest and the most beautiful glaciers in Ecuador. At 5500 m, it offers skiing opportunities for adrenaline adventurers. Due to its technical difficulty, it is less visited despite its close proximity to Quito. Reaching its summit will be an experience with memories for a lifetime.

Antisana 5704m

This volcano is ideal for every mountain climber demanding a technically difficult tour. To reach any of Antisana's four peaks, climbers must make a 2-day trip across lava, mudflows and up, through cloud forest and great stretches of paramo. Once on the peak, one has a technical, glaciated climb ahead. Only few intrepid souls can claim Antisana's summit, but for those who do it, the panoramic views will be breathtaking. Antisana is for sure a well worth effort!
